Do you have children who is starting to use the Internet? If so, you have to know that the internet is a terrific way to stay up-to-date on the news, do research for school projects, and communicating with pals, but this can possilby be really risky. As a mother or father, it’s your obligation to make sure that your son or daughter stays safe online. Sadly I must say, for this to materialize you have to fully understand your way around a personal computer and the internet.

As a general rule, a child should never know more than a parent does regarding the internet. At the minimum, you should know about the same. If you’re looking to block adult websites or websites that have offensive language, it wouldn’t be effective if your kid is familiar with methods for getting around the parental controls that you establish. That is why it is important that you understand how to use a pc along with the internet, if you do not know, learn it fast.

One more reason why you need to be well informed on the internet and personal computer use is because you are better able to fully understand the dangers of them. Perhaps you may hear that an internet predator contacted or even kidnapped a young child on the news, but you may assume that it will not happen to your child. Regrettably, until you understand how an internet operates, you truly have no clue. Just to test you, does your child use internet chat rooms or internet gaming hubs? If you do, do you know how quick the internet makes it for a person to create an entire new, fraudulent identity?

A decent knowledge of computer and internet use can better make it easier to protect your children. Did you know that Internet Explorer, the internet browser that comes in every PC, has a free parental control option that just needs to be running? A couple of easy steps and you will have a number of websites blocked from your child. Sad to say, you will not know this if you don’t know all that you can know about the computer or the internet. Speaking of the internet, additional online safety tools for parents can be purchased online as well.

Teaching yourself is an easy way to learn about the internet and computer use. In fact, what better way is there than to just jump on the computer and see what you can find. For starters, examine your computer or your internet browser for free internet safety tools for parents. You may also want to visit some of the websites that your child visits, just to see what they are subjecting themselves to. Visit their online profile for MySpace, Facebook, or another social networking website. Does it make you uneasy? Are the discussions taking place in your child’s favorite chat room too adult? Some parents buy porn blocker software as a short-term solution and I think it is good.

You can also ask a trusted friend or relative for help. Do not ask your child or teenager for help though. If they know that you want to set up parental controls or keep tabs on their internet use, they may withhold important information from you. Instead, invite a trusted friend or relative over for coffee and lunch and let them show you the ins and outs of the internet. For just a few hours on a laptop, you’ll have the knowledge.
